Norton, Former EEOC Chair, Applauds Senate Confirmation of New EEOC Commissioner Charlotte Burrows and Second-Term General Counsel P. David Lopez

December 3, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), a former chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), said she was very pleased by the Senate confirmation of Charlotte Burrows as a new EEOC Commissioner, as well as the confirmation of P. David Lopez for his second term as EEOC General Counsel. Norton met with both and later sent a letter of support to the Senate with Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-OH), chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. Burrows, the current Associate Deputy Attorney General at the Department of Justice, was confirmed by a vote of 93-2 for a term expiring July 1, 2019. Lopez was confirmed by a vote of 53-43.

"I congratulate both of these highly qualified lawyers who will bring a wealth of experience and brilliant background to the EEOC," Norton said. "They will be key assets in one of the most critical federal agencies."

Norton was appointed in 1977 to the EEOC as the first female chair by President Jimmy Carter and enforced federal job discrimination laws, such as Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, barring job discrimination.
