Norton Helicopter Noise Community Meeting to Feature DoD, Coast Guard, Park Police, FAA and MPD, Tonight
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), co-chair of the Congressional Quiet Skies Caucus, will host a community meeting on reducing helicopter noise in the District of Columbia with federal agencies that fly helicopters and manage flight paths in D.C. and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) tonight, Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at 6:00 p.m., at the West End Library (2301 L St. NW). The Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, Park Police, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and MPD will participate. Residents who attend will have the opportunity to be heard.
"I regard this community meeting as a problem-solving session that gets all involved in the same room," Norton said. "We are assembling all the federal and local agencies that regularly fly helicopters over the District of Columbia to learn what can be done about helicopter noise in our neighborhoods. We will question the agencies on the seeming increase in helicopter flights, and what efforts they can take to mitigate ground-level noise. Questions and comments from the public in attendance should sharpen our focus on causes and remedies."
In November, Norton hosted a Quiet Skies Caucus briefing with FAA and Department of Defense officials about helicopter noise. Based on complaints Norton's office has received and information presented at the Caucus briefing, Norton decided that this community meeting would help address solutions.
Norton has held several community meetings on airplane noise, and got several provisions included in the recently passed House FAA reauthorization bill to combat airplane noise and to study its health effects in D.C.
