Norton Helping Residents with Last-Minute Sign-up for Health Insurance Before Deadline
WASHINGTON, DC – With today’s deadline for D.C. residents to sign up for health insurance through DC Health Link, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) alerted residents that they can get free sign-up help from insurance brokers and DC Health Link today at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library (901 G St. NW), from 10:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m., and that her office can provide further information, including on free brokers to sign up for health insurance. For further information, residents can reach Norton’s district office at (202) 408-9041 and her Capitol Hill office at (202) 225-8050. In addition to sign-up assistance at the MLK Library, there are other enrollment sites throughout the city today that are a part of DC Health Link’s “Final Push Monday.” (See end of release below for details.)
“All hands are on deck, beginning with the President, to get D.C. residents and other Americans signed up for health insurance before the midnight deadline tonight,” said Norton. “With so many helping residents to sign up for health insurance, it is not an intimidating process. There is plenty of assistance available and no excuse for any resident to be without health insurance after today.”
Though the deadline to sign up has not been extended, the Administration last week announced that those who have trouble signing up through the online marketplace before today’s deadline will have until about mid-April to request an extension.
Last week and this weekend, leading up to today’s deadline, Norton, a co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Black Men and Boys, has led an initiative with Caucus co-chair Danny Davis (D-IL) and Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) chair Marcia Fudge to encourage African Americans, with a special focus on African American men, to sign up for health insurance before the deadline at healthcare.gov or through their local exchange. The special focus to get African American men to sign up for health insurance is because they are the demographic with the lowest enrollment, despite their high asthma, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular, and HIV rates. Members of the CBC have been tweeting using the hashtag #BlackMenEnroll. The Congresswoman is encouraging members of the public and the media to keep an eye out for these pictures, tweets and hashtags on social media, and to continue the discussion through social media.
