Norton Hosts 13th Annual Job Fair Tuesday, June 8th
Norton Hosts 13th Annual Job Fair Tuesday, June 8th WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will host her Annual Job Fair on Tuesday, June 8, 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Washington Convention Center - Hall C, 801 Mt. Vernon Avenue NW for District residents only. Recruiters representing more than 100 employers from across the public and private sectors with confirmed job openings will be in attendance. Among the employers include AFLAC, Catholic University, CBS Radio, D.C. Department of Human Resources, FBI, FedEx Ground, Pepco, RCN, U.S. Department of State, and Washington Hospital Center. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 431,000 jobs were added to the workforce in May; decreasing the national unemployment rate for the fifth consecutive month to 9.7 percent. "Unlike the last report showing terrific growth in private sector jobs, most of May's jobs were temporary Census positions," Norton said. "Yet it is clear that the private sector is now growing too, and a disproportionate growth in both sectors is in this city and region. Our job fair will have a smorgasbord sampling of these jobs, allowing residents to do one-stop shopping instead of trooping around the region." Thousands of District residents will have the opportunity to interview with recruiters across a variety of industries, like last year, when some received job offers on the spot. "At the same time," Norton said "I will continue to help unemployed and underemployed residents as I did last week, when Congress passed the American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act to create more jobs and extend unemployment benefits." Tuesday's job fair will also offer a workshop on resume writing, interviewing skills, and the revised federal employee application, as well as, a "Dress for Success" fashion show to help District residents better prepare for employment opportunities. The workshop and fashion show will run from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Participants are asked to wear professional attire, bring copies of their resumes, and bring proof of D.C. residency (D.C. photo ID card, utility bill, or the like). A complete list of participating companies and agencies will be provided onsite. |
