‘Norton in Your Neighborhood’ Tomorrow Night with NoMa BID
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will host a “Norton in Your Neighborhood” community conversation with the NoMa Business Improvement District (BID) tomorrow, Wednesday, March 9, 2016, at 6:30 p.m., at 1200 First St. NE, Suite 310. Norton will discuss the future of NoMa, one of the first areas propelled to economic development because of Norton’s work; her other economic development projects in the District of Columbia; several victories for D.C. she got included in last year’s surface transportation bill; success in getting pre-tax commuter transit benefits equal to parking benefits; federal safety oversight over the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority; new pilot funding projects for the Highway Trust Fund, which funds roads, bridges, and transit; a 25% increase for the D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant Program (DCTAG); and other congressional issues of interest.
“I am proud of the work of NoMa BID, which has helped make NoMa one of the most desirable communities in the District,” Norton said. “NoMa is premium land close to the Capitol that was a virtual wasteland a few years ago because developers waited to see if the federal government would move there. In committee, I went after the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) for catering to agency preferences for the center of town at greater cost to taxpayers. After we got language that made it impossible for GSA to avoid moving to NoMa and a new Metro station, major federal agencies like the Department of Justice and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives began to move there. Today, NoMa is a new hot spot of mixed-use development of apartments, condos, restaurants, and shops. I look forward to hearing from the NoMa business community and residents and learning if there is anything more we should be doing in Congress.”
“We are thrilled to host a ’Norton in Your Neighborhood’ with Congresswoman Norton in NoMa,” NoMa BID President Robin-Eve Jasper said. “Congresswoman Norton is the visionary who saw the incredible potential of NoMa and has been a hugely successful advocate for not just NoMa, but the entire District. This is a great opportunity for residents to participate in a conversation with a terrific legislator about important issues.”
