‘Norton in Your Neighborhood’ Tonight with Palisades Citizens’ Association to Focus on Her Provisions to Combat Airplane Noise and Other D.C. Priorities in Congress
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will host a “Norton in Your Neighborhood” community conversation with the Palisades Citizens’ Association tonight, Tuesday, March 1, 2016, from 8:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., at the Palisades Recreation Center (5200 Sherier PL NW). Among other congressional issues, Norton will engage Palisades-area and other District of Columbia residents in a discussion focusing on the significant provisions she got included in the recent Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reauthorization bill to address outrageous airplane noise that has been plaguing communities in the District and nationwide as a result of new Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) flight paths. Last year, Norton held a standing-room only community airplane noise town hall with residents and officials from the FAA and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA). Following that meeting, Norton got MWAA to convene an airplane noise working group that includes D.C. and Virginia residents and airline officials to make recommendations to the FAA on flight paths.
In addition, Norton defeated an attempt during the FAA reauthorization markup to add additional large planes and airplane noise at Reagan National Airport (DCA) to accommodate more flights outside the current 1,250 mile DCA perimeter.
“We are not going to stop until our neighbors in the Palisades and surrounding neighborhoods are free from unbearable airplane noise,” Norton said. “I want to hear from the community for ideas as we build on the progress we have made in bills pending in the Congress. I will also be discussing other important business in the Congress that I believe will interest Palisades residents.”
