Norton Introduces a Resolution Urging a Stamp Recognizing Constantino Brumidi

March 5, 2013

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today introduced a resolution urging the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee of the United States Postal Service to issue a "forever stamp" recognizing Constantino Brumidi in 2015, the 150th anniversary of his completion of The Apotheosis of Washington, the fresco in the eye of the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol.

"Over the past century and a half, millions of people have seen and been inspired by Brumidi's artwork in the Capitol," said Norton. "Not only has The Apotheosis of Washington become a national icon, but he made many additional extraordinary contributions to the Capitol, including a mural called Boston Massacre which was the first tribute to an African American in the Capitol. Congress has already given Brumidi its highest honor. It is a short step from that honor to the ‘forever stamp' my resolution encourages."

Norton was one of 303 cosponsors of the House bill, enacted in 2008, to posthumously award Brumidi the Congressional Gold Medal, Congress' highest honor for accomplishment.
