Norton Issues Tribute to Eunice Kennedy Shriver
August 11, 2009
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today, in extending her condolences to the Kennedy family for the loss of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, issued the following statement:
"Unlike her brothers, Eunice Kennedy Shriver did not seek public office, only to do public good. Acting on her own deep sense of compassion for others, she lived a life of uniquely compelling actions on behalf of people with mental disabilities. For Ms. Shriver, mental disability was not an issue but a calling. Her brain child, Special Olympics, has done more than any single action or program to free the public from stereotypes about mental disabilities and discrimination against those with these conditions. The work of Eunice Kennedy Shriver has inspired millions, the world over, and left a legacy that knows no ending."
