Norton Jobs and Economic Development Bills Earn Her ‘Lifetime Legacy Award’ from D.C. Chamber
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) received the District of Columbia Chamber of Commerce's Lifetime Legacy Award, a rare honor for a progressive Democrat, this weekend at the 2014 Chamber's Choice Awards and Gala. The annual event hosted hundreds of District leaders, decision-makers, and dignitaries. She received the award as a result of four projects from her work providing jobs and business opportunities for her constituents. The projects constitute the largest projects-in-progress in the District today: the D.C. Wharf, developing the Southwest Waterfront; The Yards, developing the Southeast Waterfront; the Old Post Office Building, developing the iconic, 114-year-old building into a first-rate luxury hotel and bringing $100 million in tax revenue to the District in its first ten years; and the new Department of Homeland Security Headquarters, which the Congresswoman has just gotten the funds to develop the Center Building to house the Secretary and DHS staff. Another one of Norton's redevelopment efforts, the redevelopment of the NOMA section of D.C., is nearly complete. Additionally, Norton's $5,000 homebuyer and business tax credits were instrumental in helping to preserve D.C.'s residential and business tax base in the wake of the control board period.
"I very much appreciate the recognition by the D.C. Chamber of Commerce of my work in economic development," Norton said. "The highest profile is often given to my work on the city's overarching priorities, for its citizenship rights and statehood. However, my job is also to provide job and business opportunities, like every other Member of Congress. I thank the Chamber for highlighting this work."
