Norton Jobs and Opportunities Fair to Feature Nearly 100 Employers, “Top 10 Tips” Workshops

August 22, 2012

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced today that her office has had to turn away employers interested in taking part in her annual Jobs and Opportunities Fair on Thursday, August 23, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Washington Convention Center (800 Mt. Vernon Place NW, near New York Ave. NW and 7th St. NW), after reaching the maximum number. Nevertheless, this year's fair will include 85 employers with open jobs, including many private D.C. and regional employers, from Safeway to Lord and Taylor, and federal, city and regional governments. At 10:00 a.m., a pre-Jobs Fair "Top 10 Tips" hour will feature strategies for creating a better resume, for applying for federal jobs, for using a temporary employment agency, and for getting jobs in the expanding hospitality industry, which was chosen because of the large number of jobs available here. A "dress for success" fashion show will top off the hour of Top 10 Tips. At 11:00 a.m., employers will begin meeting with job hunters. The Jobs and Opportunities Fair is open to D.C. residents only. Attendees must bring a photo ID, utility bill, or other proof of District residency.

"Unemployment in the District has been steadily declining for several months, but remains higher than the national average," Norton said. "Our annual Jobs and Opportunities Fair has been popular because it brings job-seekers and employers with open jobs together under one roof, saving everyone time and expense. All of the employers have open jobs, which is a requirement to participate. Attendees will also have the opportunity for conversations with technical schools and universities about continuing education, which also should prove helpful. We have worked hard on the pre-Jobs Fair "Top 10 Tips" and geared them to this year's job market. Residents should polish up their resume and dress to impress on Thursday!"
