Norton to Meet with Army Corps of Engineers Commander Today to Discuss Toxic Chemicals Found in Spring Valley
August 13, 2009
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will meet today with U.S. Army Corps Engineers Commander David Anderson at 1 p.m. in her office to discuss a flask containing the chemical agent mustard found in the District's Spring Valley neighborhood last week. Norton, who got a Subcommittee hearing on the 15-year clean-up of Spring Valley in June, also got a commitment at the hearing from the Corps to remain in Spring Valley until a complete clean-up is confirmed. Norton has worked with residents of Spring Valley, the Army Corps, and the Department of Defense on the clean-up of chemical weapons since they were discovered at American University and in other neighborhood sites. The Army Corps, claiming the clean-up of the site was complete, had left the site twice without consulting Congress only to be required to return when more munitions were found.
