Norton Offers Condolences on the Passing of Dominique Frazier

September 23, 2011

September 23, 2011

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) wrote to the mother of 18-year-old Dominique Frazier, who was tragically killed by another student at Bowie State University, and is being eulogized today at Assumption Catholic Church in Washington, DC. Norton called Ms. Frazier after learning of Dominique's death.

Norton's letter follows.

My Dear Ms. Frazier,

I was most impressed with your personal strength and your strength of character when I called you after Dominique's tragic death. It is with deep regret that I am unable to be with you this morning, as I had planned. I must be at a hearing of great importance to the District of Columbia.

The entire city is in deep sadness over the loss of Dominique, your only child. Your burden is compounded by the recent loss of your husband as well. I can only hope that you will not only mourn Dominique's loss but that you also celebrate the life of a child that had shown herself to be so bright and accomplished in the time that was given to her. I hope also that you will take some comfort in the critical role you played in Dominique's life and development. You did everything right and so did she. Her record of achievement at Friendship Academy Charter School and in college is only part of the testament to your own influence as a loving and devoted parent.

I did not know Dominique, but I now know that she was away at college as one of our DCTAG kids. That creates a natural bond between you and me. Please know that you can call upon me at any time, and that you and your family have my love and deepest sympathy.

Sincerely,

Eleanor Holmes Norton
