Norton Offers Early Congratulations to Sen. Johnson, Presumptive Chair of Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee

November 21, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), a senior member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, today released a statement offering early congratulations to Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI), the presumptive chair of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, which has jurisdiction over District of Columbia matters, who, according to Roll Call, recently announced his general preference for more home rule for the District.

"I offer my early congratulations to Senator Ron Johnson on his presumptive chairmanship, and look forward to working closely with him. I hope to visit with Senator Johnson at his convenience and to introduce him to Mayor-elect Muriel Bowser. Like the counterpart House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, on which I serve, Senator Johnson's committee devotes most of its time to issues of national importance, but some D.C. issues must come to Congress, such as the recent change giving the District additional jurisdiction over the height of buildings. The tradition of both the House and Senate committees with D.C. jurisdiction has been that local matters are for local government, consistent with the American principles of federalism and local control."
