Norton Participates in Call with Ukrainian President to Discuss Russian Invasion
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), a member of the Congressional Ukrainian Caucus, today participated in a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Zelenskyy provided details concerning civilian casualties, including the bombing of two kindergartens, and the targeting of three nuclear power plants. Drawing upon the shared values of democracy, Zelenskyy thanked the United States for imposing powerful sanctions on Russia, and reiterated his call for a no-fly zone over Ukraine or for the delivery of fighter jets. Zelenskyy said Ukraine wants peace, and is fighting for its sovereignty, not against Russia.
"Russia's unprovoked and barbaric invasion of Ukraine has caused needless death and destruction and a humanitarian crisis," Norton said. "I applaud the courage of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people in defending their country against a much larger military. I also applaud the cooperation and unity the United States and Europe have shown in supporting Ukraine and holding Russia accountable. This war must end now."
