Norton Pleased with Response from House Clerk on Preserving Artifacts from Attack on Capitol

March 11, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) received a response to her letter urging the Clerk of the House of Representatives (Clerk) and the Architect of the Capitol (AOC) to preserve and display some of the artifacts of the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S Capitol. Norton wrote the Clerk and AOC on February 11th.

In her response, Clerk Cheryl L. Johnson detailed how her staff had conducted "rapid-response collecting" after the attack to preserve materials such as flags, air horns, and body armor left behind by rioters and law enforcement. The Clerk and AOC also are gathering other materials, such as signs broken by rioters and tributes to police officers who defended the Capitol.

"Thank you, Clerk Johnson and your office, for your timely response, and for so thoughtfully saving and describing the items you've collected from that terrible day in our nation's history," Norton said. "I appreciate your preserving these items so that future generations can see them and learn from them, and so that the events of January 6th never happen again."
