Norton Pledges to Work with Gray for a United City
September 15, 2010
WASHINGTON, DC -- Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today said that D.C. Council Chair Vincent Gray struck the right note this afternoon when he made uniting this city his first order of business, and she pledged to work with him in his efforts to bring this city together. Norton said, "As we struggle to keep a dangerous gun bill from obliterating the District's new gun laws and to get the city its vote and full equality as the states, we will need a city where unnecessary and harmful division has been set aside. During my service in the Congress, I have been gratified and fortunate to represent a district where our racial diversity has seldom caused contentious policy and political differences. With the head start of unity on most issues of public policy, we must not allow extraneous matters such as race to appear to divide us. With public officials and citizens alike working together, I am confident that Vince Gray will quickly heal any breaches that may have developed so that we can get on with the major issues that confront us in the city and in the Congress."
Norton also expressed gratitude to her constituents for the strong vote she received in yesterday's contest and pledged to use the confidence placed in her to help Vincent Gray and local officials produce "one city," the District at its best.
