Norton Ready to Help Bring Dance to the National Mall
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) is gearing up for the District's third annual National Dance Day, celebrated throughout the United States and around the world, on Saturday, July 28, 2012, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the National Mall near 12th and Jefferson streets NW. The Congresswoman is working in cooperation with the sponsors of National Dance Day – the First Lady's "Let's Move!," the Washington Area Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA) and the Dizzy Feet Foundation, established by producer and celebrity judge Nygel Lythgoe of the popular national television show So You Think You Can Dance. This year's D.C. celebration will feature two celebrity guests – famous Zumba instructor Kass Martin, andSo You Think You Can Dance Season 7 winner Lauren Froderman. Martin will lead the crowd in a Zumba routine during the celebration, and Froderman will teach the crowd a hip-hop dance. Local groups will perform a range of dances, from hip-hop to tap to flamenco to stepping. Hometown favorites the Manzari Brothers, who appeared on So You Think You Can Dance after Lythgoe saw them perform during the first National Dance Day celebration in D.C. are also appearing this year. The District's celebration will be hosted by WKYS radio personality Jeannie Jones and Miss DC USA, Monique Thompkins, and is produced by Michael McBride, manager of MetroArts at WMATA.
"After its first two years, National Dance Day has now built a constituency of its own in this region, and support and excitement have grown across the nation and around the world, too," Norton said. "D.C. is a dancing city, and our talented performers will get everybody up and moving. We are promoting dance as both an art and a form of exercise to combat overweight and obesity, but I like to dance because it is just plain fun. I am looking forward to joining in the Zumba routine and hip-hop demonstration. Once the music starts, no dance is too hard to do!"
National Dance Day is free and open to the public.
