WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) issued the following statement celebrating the life of her friend Professor Derrick Bell:

"Derrick Bell's personal and intellectual restlessness about race was a prod that reminded all who rejoiced in news of racial progress, large and small, that so late in the country's history, progress could only signal the need for redoubled effort. Derrick carved out a unique space and found joy and fulfillment in filling it. I can only hope that there will be someone big and brave enough to fill it now."
