Norton Remembers Nadine Winter, Member of D.C.’s First Elected Council
August 30, 2011
WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) expressed condolences to the family of former Ward 6 D.C. Councilmember Nadine P. Winter, who served on the first elected D.C. Council in 1975 and remained on the Council until 1990. Norton's statement follows:
"This city will remember former Councilmember Nadine Winter for her outspoken dedication to our city, particularly to Ward 6. Nadine, who was one of the longest serving members of the Council, served before I was elected to Congress, but no one could have missed her innovative and determined commitment to housing as chair of the Council's Housing and Urban Development Committee. Her work as chair of the Public Works Committee that led the city to recycling stands today as a reminder of service ahead of its time. As a member of our city's first home-rule Council, Councilmember Winter will always be credited for her work in showing Congress that this city needed only the right to make its own laws and to be able to do so with the best of them. After leaving the Council, Nadine never stopped serving and continued to be involved in activities in service to the city and particularly those most in need. I offer my deepest sympathy to the former Councilmember's son, Reginald, and family."
