Norton Remembers Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth
October 6, 2011
WASHINGTON, DC -- Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today released the following statement on the passing of civil rights leader, Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth:
"Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth was the last of the great founders of the modern activist civil rights movement. With rare courage, Reverend Shuttlesworth repeatedly risked his life and endured many personal sacrifices for racial justice during the most dangerous days, and in the most fearsome parts of the segregated South. As the nation commemorates the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, may we remember that Dr. King did not lead alone and that Reverend Shuttlesworth was among the most courageous and tenacious of the great civil rights leaders of the 20th century."
