WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today urged students in grades 8-12 in public, charter, and private middle and high schools across the District of Columbia to participate in the 2015 Annual Congressional Art Competition. The deadline for submissions is Friday, April 24. The submissions are part of the nationwide high school arts competition sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation. A winner of the contest from each state and D.C. has the honor of displaying his or her artwork in the U.S. Capitol for one year, and the District winner will receive a special recognition from the congresswoman. First place will receive a four-year partial scholarship to the Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta, GA, a laptop computer, and a digital camera; second place will receive a laptop computer and a summer scholarship to the University of the District of Columbia with use of their gallery for a one-person show and other exhibits; and third place will receive a digital camera. In addition, all participants will receive a congressional certificate of appreciate, and participants attending the Awards Reception and Exhibit will receive free art supplies along with tickets for entertainment, cultural and sports events. The local D.C. competition ends with an award ceremony, which will take place on Thursday, May 21, 2015, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., at the Ronald Reagan National Airport's Historic Terminal A lobby. The ceremony will feature artwork from the competition finalists, food, and music.

"The Congressional Art Competition is an incredible opportunity for D.C. students to showcase their talent to the entire country," Norton said. "We have hundreds of incredibly gifted students ready to step up to the plate. There will be recognition and prizes for all who participate. I hope parents, teachers, and neighbors encourage our city's students to participate and experience the joy of art."
