Norton Requests Briefing with ICE Officials Following Reports of Indiscriminate Raids in D.C. Neighborhoods

July 16, 2018

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today requested a briefing from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials on reported raids conducted by ICE last week in the Mt. Pleasant and Columbia Heights neighborhoods in the District of Columbia. Local residents reported that ICE arrested at least a dozen individuals. Norton said the round-up of many of the residents appeared to be indiscriminate or based on racial profiling, and without a warrant.

"The reported ICE raids conducted last week in predominantly Latino D.C. neighborhoods signals that anyone on our streets could be arrested based on appearance, a danger to each and every D.C. resident," Norton said. "D.C. is a sanctuary city that deeply values our immigrant residents. Such raids erode trust in law enforcement everywhere in the District. We need a full briefing and report on these raids and how they were carried out."
