Norton Resolution Gears Up Region to Celebrate National Dance Day
WASHINGTON, D.C. – As the House begins its session in July, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will introduce a resolution to mark Saturday, July 28th as the date for the 2012 National Dance Day. National Dance Day encourages all forms of dance as physical exercise to defeat the epidemic of obesity and to celebrate dancing as an art form and for fun. The Dizzy Feet Foundation, established by producer and celebrity judge Nygel Lythgoe of the popular national television show So You Think You Can Dance, and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority in conjunction with Norton's office will sponsor the 2012 National Dance Day event, to be held Saturday, July 28th from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the National Mall near the Capitol Reflecting Pool. While producer Michael McBride of MetroArts is out of town, dance groups from classical to popular from the region who want to be selected to participate can send video clips of their performances to nortonevents@mail.house.gov">nortonevents@mail.house.govby July 5th.
"As my National Dance Day enters its third year, support and excitement has increased, particularly in the nation's capital, where National Dance Day takes place on the National Mall, the capstone location for National Dance Day," Norton said. "Nygel Lythgoe has called on nations around the world to establish their own National Dance Day, and last year, National Dance Day celebrations occurred throughout the United States and all over the world. In our city and region, we often see people going to locations that feature hand dancing and other forms of dancing, living the active lifestyle that National Dance Day is promoting, to use dance to improve health and, in the process, have fun.
The Congresswoman first introduced a resolution to mark National Dance Day in 2010, celebrated the last Saturday in July annually. The text of her resolution to designate July 28th as 2012 National Dance Day follows.
