Norton Rounded Out Ellington Week at Coin Distribution at Industrial Bank of Washington
February 26, 2009
Washington , D.C. - Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) this morning rounded out Ellington Week activities and celebrations of the new D.C. quarter, featuring Duke Ellington, with a coin distribution at the Industrial Bank of Washington. The coin distribution was held at 10 a.m., at 2000 11th Street, NW, off the U Street corridor, which Ellington helped establish as a major venue for African American entertainers.
Ellington week activities began with the Congresswoman's official unveiling of the Ellington coin, only the second U.S. coin in circulation to feature an African American (the first to feature a prominent African American solo). That unveiling was done Tuesday during the Congresswoman's Black History Month Celebration at the Smithsonian's Museum of American History, which houses an extensive archive of Ellington material and which currently hosts the Scurlock Exhibit, which includes a photo of Ellington in a collection of photos depicting Black Washingtonians. The coin distribution this morning was held at the oldest and largest minority-owned bank in the Washington area.
