Norton’s D.C. Tax Fair Featuring Free Neighborhood Tax Preparers, Saturday

February 5, 2013

Washington, DC--The Office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today announced that that Norton's annual Tax and Financial Services Fair will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2013, from 10 a.m. – noon at the Washington Convention Center. This year's Tax Fair features IRS-certified tax preparers and non-profit organizations from neighborhood IRS VITA/TCE sites, which serve on Norton's Congressional Tax and Financial Services Advisory Committee, as well as members of the D.C. Bar Association. The Tax Fair is for D.C. residents only, and taxes will be prepared free of charge. Also offering services will be Bee Hive, a self-tax preparation organization, which will teach residents who want to learn how to prepare simple tax returns, and the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS), which helps taxpayers resolve tax issues. The Tax Fair offersnot only tax preparation but also financial services, including information on the D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant Program, college savings plans, and credit unions.

Norton said, "Our volunteer tax preparers are performing a vital service for residents, who must pay the same taxes as other Americans without getting a vote in Congress in return. D.C. Tax and Financial Services Advisory Committee members are helping to achieve our goal of having no low- or moderate-income or unemployed residents or seniors pay in order to have their taxes prepared."

Members of the Tax and Financial Services Advisory Committee participating in the Tax Fair include: AARP Foundation, Community Tax Aid VITA Site, DC Government Federal Credit Union VITA Site, DC Tax and Revenue Service, the George Washington University Tax Clinic, Bee Hive, and IRS Tax Advocate.

Norton and the Tax and Financial Services Advisory Committee are seeking to promote and popularize the neighborhood tax preparation sites to better acquaint residents with free tax preparers in their own neighborhoods, which operate throughout tax season until April 15th. Many residents are unable come to Norton's one-day Tax Fair and are unaware that there are free tax services near where they live.
