Norton Says Nation Must Choose Non-Violence After Tragic Loss of Dallas Police Officers and Police Shooting Victims
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) released the following statement on the shootings that killed five police officers and wounded several others in Dallas, TX and the police shootings that occurred earlier this week in Baton Rouge, LA and Falcon Heights, MN.
“Last night’s tragic ambush and murder of five police officers in Dallas, who were protecting marchers as they peacefully protested this week’s police shootings, shows the deeply painful irony of the violence we are experiencing in our country. Our hearts and prayers are with the families of the police officers we lost and the families who lost loved ones in Louisiana and Minnesota. As a veteran of the civil rights movement who saw peaceful protests bring change to our country, I know that non-violence works, and it is the path we must choose. The courage of the Dallas police officers, who ran toward the sniper in order to protect the peaceful marchers, demonstrates how much we all need our police and how unfailing is the courage of the vast majority of our law enforcement officers. The courageous Dallas police, not the individual officers in Baton Rouge, LA or Falcon Heights, MN, exemplify the profession and what it stands for.”
