Norton Says Re-opening of Embassies in Havana and D.C. Best Way to Begin Exposure to Democratic Values and Expanded Economic Opportunities

July 1, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today released the following statement after President Obama announced that the Administration has reached a deal with Cuba to re-establish diplomatic relations and re-open embassies.

"Today's announcement of re-opening of embassies and re-establishing diplomatic relations is a historic moment for the U.S. and for Cuba as we move toward reshaping our relationship to meet conditions in the 21st century. A U.S. embassy in Havana is the best way today to continue our efforts to support the desire of the Cuban people for democracy and increased economic opportunities. Isolating them has not only left most Cubans in poverty; their detachment from any way to discover what democracy looks like and the risks involved has diminished to a small number the brave souls who are outspoken against autocratic rule in today's Cuba. Re-opening the embassies, at the very least, can begin Cuba's exposure to American values and democratic principles. I particularly look forward to a Cuban embassy opening here in the District of Columbia. Whatever the reasons for U.S. policy for 60 years, the Cuban people today want and need engagement, not isolation, if change is to come."
