Norton Says Supreme Court Should Uphold President Obama’s Constitutional Immigration Executive Actions to Keep Families Together

April 18, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) released the following statement in support of President Obama’s executive actions on immigration, including the expanded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) program, as oral arguments took place today before the U.S. Supreme Court.

“President Obama’s executive actions on immigration are not only legal, they are a measured approach to keep families together and to allow individuals who have lived law-abiding lives to remain in the United States and come out of the shadows to work and pay taxes. The President’s actions are very much in line with presidential actions on immigration by Republican and Democratic presidents in the past. Fortunately, President Obama had executive authority to act after Congress abdicated its legislative responsibilities by refusing to take up comprehensive immigration reform that is supported by a wide majority of the American people. I am hopeful that the Supreme Court will uphold the President’s actions and allow the administration to begin implementing DAPA and expand DACA to keep families together and give hope to millions of immigrants who have earned the right to be counted as part of the American family and contribute to the country that has become their home.”
