Norton Says Trump Impeachment Trial Highlights D.C.’s Lack of Voting Representation in Congress, Remedy is Statehood
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today said that the upcoming Senate trial of former President Trump for inciting insurrection underscores the need for District of Columbia statehood, which would give the District two senators to consider Trump's conduct.
"D.C. will not have a vote in the upcoming Senate trial of former President Trump," Norton said. "This historic trial highlights the need for statehood for the District of Columbia. The 712,000+ residents of our nation's capital should have a say in this decision, particularly considering that the insurrection incited on January 6th affected us the most. I will continue advocating for D.C. statehood."
Norton reintroduced her D.C. statehood bill this month with a record number of original cosponsors (202), and now has 209 cosponsors. Last year, the House overwhelmingly passed the bill, which was the first time either house had ever passed the bill.
