Norton Secures $57 Million for New Howard University Hospital in Senate Appropriations Bill
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced today that she has gotten $57 million for a new Howard University Hospital in the Senate's fiscal year 2022 Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill. Norton has long supported a new hospital and wrote an op-ed in The Hillarguing for the funding in July.
"Howard is the world's oldest institution primarily dedicated to the training of Black medical professionals," Norton said. "This institution, in continuous operation for more than 150 years, is the 10th most competitive medical school in the nation. Half its graduates go on to treat patients in underserved communities across the country, and each year it trains over half of all new Black doctors in the U.S. The funding in the Senate appropriations bill will also benefit the District by contributing to training more medical professionals to provide life-saving treatments and providing a facility in which they can research and practice."
Norton secured $184 million for a new Howard University Hospital in the House-passed fiscal year 2022 Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill.
