Norton Sends Personal Note of Encouragement to President Carter and Comments on His Continuing Service and Resiliency
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today sent former President Jimmy Carter, who appointed her as the first woman to chair the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, a personal note of encouragement for his recovery from cancer, which was announced earlier this week.
The Congresswoman did not release her personal note to the former president, but in a public statement today she said that President Carter has led a remarkable life for 35 years since the end of his presidency. Norton said he has been a model for how presidents can continue to make significant contributions after leaving the most powerful post in the world. At 90, she said, President Carter's resilience in the face of this personal illness cannot be doubted.
