January 30, 2013

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will speak today at the U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters at 2100 2nd Street SW, at 1:00 p.m. for the agency's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day program, part of her effort and that of the Coast Guard to transition the Coast Guard to its new home in Ward 8 later this year. She will speak as well about the historic move of the first federal agency east of the Anacostia River, and the economic benefits of the federal presence, and the benefit to the Coast Guard of securing a long-awaited new, spacious headquarters.

Norton held hearings and roundtables during the construction of the headquarters, and monitored D.C. resident hiring and D.C. small business contracts through monthly reports and unannounced visits. She will speak about a job fair for residents seeking employment at the agency's headquarters, which residents have been instrumental in building.
