Norton Statement on Passing of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia

February 13, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) released the following statement on the passing of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

“Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, one of the Court’s most caustic dissenters, nevertheless left his unique mark on the Court. I am far from alone in taking issue with his virtually dogmatic originalist views. Yet, our polarized Congress—and country—could learn much from Justice Scalia’s close and cordial relationships with his colleagues and they with him, notwithstanding the biting language of his decisions. Justice Scalia’s special relationship with Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is, of course, most often cited. I did not know Justice Scalia, but I will never forget his good humor when both Justices Scalia and Ginsburg and I were among a small group invited to sit on stage as extras in a scene set in a café during an opera, while the major performers sang their roles at the Kennedy Center.

“I express my condolences to Justice Scalia’s wife, Maureen, and his entire family.”
