Norton Statement on the Passing of Evelyn Lowery

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today made the following statement on the passing of Evelyn Lowery, the wife of civil rights leader Reverend Joseph Lowery, and the founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference Women, Inc. and the annual Drum Major of Justice Awards.

"Evelyn Lowery stood out as the loving wife and professional partner of the great civil rights leader Reverend Joseph Lowery," said Norton. "She was a unique force for civil rights and women's empowerment. My thoughts are with her devoted husband Reverend Lowery and the family. Evelyn Lowery will long be remembered for her many accomplishments and especially for her leadership and dedication to women."
