Norton Thanks Hoyer for Reaffirming His Commitment to Bring the D.C. Statehood Bill to the House Floor This Year
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today issued a statement after Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) reaffirmed his intent yesterday to bring the District of Columbia statehood bill to the House floor during the coronavirus pandemic.
"I know that D.C. officials and residents join me in appreciating Majority Leader Steny Hoyer's announcement that he still intends to bring the D.C. statehood bill to the House floor this year. At a time when the pandemic has assured that only bills of great significance can receive a vote this year, Leader Hoyer's decision reflects his longstanding, outspoken support for equal rights for the residents of the District of Columbia, including in a Washington Post op-ed in support of statehood he authored last year. With Leader Hoyer's support and Speaker Nancy Pelosi's continuing leadership, we are now assured that the House will make history this year with passage of the D.C. statehood bill for the first time in either chamber in the District's 219-year history."
