Norton to Appear on WHUR’s Hour-Long Daily Drum Tribute to the Life and Legacy of Marion Barry, Tonight
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will appear on an hour-long program about the life and legacy of Ward 8 councilmember and former mayor of the District of Columbia Marion Barry tonight, November 24, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on WHUR's The Daily Drum radio show (96.3 FM). Norton will be joined by D.C. community leaders and reporters. The segment can be live-streamed here: https://www.whur.com/whur-96-3-listen-live/.
"Marion Barry was a larger-than-life figure in our community and he deserves a larger-than-life recognition of his accomplishments for the District of Columbia," Norton said.
Norton, a former member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), first met Barry when he was the first chair of SNCC. Upon moving into elected office in Washington, Norton and Barry worked together over the years to improve conditions in the city and in Ward 8. Barry worked closely with Norton on her work that is bringing the Department of Homeland Security complex to Ward 8, making it the first federal agency east of the Anacostia River. They also worked together on her bill, the Federal and District of Columbia Government Real Property Act of 2006 that transferred Poplar Point and other federal land to the District.
Norton said his wife, Cora Masters Barry, and his son, Marion Christopher Barry, continue to remain in her thoughts and prayers.
