Norton to Applaud New Homeowners on Saturday and to Recognize The Rickey, the City's Official Cocktail, Sunday

July 15, 2011

WASHINGTON, DC -- This weekend Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will speak at two events, one celebrating progress, and another celebrating a D.C. tradition. At Gallaudet Street and Central Place NE, she will help dedicate several new homes for seven families at the Habitat for Humanity Ivy City Phase I Dedication Ceremony on Saturday, July 16 at 1:00 p.m. "While the housing market is still stuck and people continue to lose their homes, these affordable two- and three-bedroom homes in Northeast show what can still be done," said Norton. "These families have earned their homes by digging in and helping to build them." Norton will be joined by representatives from Calstar, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, LATICRETE, Tile Partners for Humanity, Marriott International, and Whirlpool, all Habitat Ivy City corporate sponsors.

On Sunday at 5:00 p.m. at the J.W. Marriott, 1331 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Norton will assist in unveiling a plaque installed at the site where The Rickey was created in the 1880's, as a recognition to the city's culinary traditions and uniqueness. "The ghost of many forgotten traditions floats around this town, but reviving ‘The Rickey' should be great fun." D.C. Councilmember Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) introduced a proclamation recognizing July 2011 as Rickey month. The Rickey contains Gin, Bourbon or Rye, Whiskey, a half of lime, sparkling mineral water, and ice.
