Norton to Attend Community Meeting on CSX Virginia Avenue Tunnel Project Thursday
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will speak briefly at a meeting she asked CSX to hold for residents concerned about the freight rail company's Virginia Avenue tunnel expansion project on Thursday, September 27, 2012, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Capitol Skyline Hotel, 10 I Street SW. Officials from CSX, the Federal Highway Administration, the Federal Railroad Administration, and the District Department of Transportation will address residents' concerns about the project and its potential impact on homes near the Virginia Avenue tunnel. CSX is preparing to expand its Virginia Avenue tunnel to allow for more freight trains to pass through. Though not required by law, Norton specifically requested that FHA, the lead federal agency, convene this additional community meeting before making final decisions on the project.
"Residents living in recently constructed homes near the Virginia Avenue railroad tunnel continue to have concerns about safety, noise, and CSX's plan to handle freight rail traffic during the construction process," Norton said. "I hope this community meeting will prove helpful to all concerned about the project."
