Norton to Attend D.C. Chamber of Commerce Dinner to Celebrate Award to Developer of The Yards, Neighborhood Created from Norton Bill
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will attend the District of Columbia Chamber of Commerce’s annual dinner to celebrate the Chamber’s Economic Impact Award to Forest City Washington this evening, Friday, November 4, 2016, at the Marriot Marquis (901 Massachusetts Ave. NW). Forest City Washington is the master developer of The Yards, which is the key mixed-use development in the Capital Riverfront neighborhood authorized by Norton’s bill, the Southeast Federal Center Public-Private Development Act of 2000 (Public Law 106–407), which allowed private-sector development of federal land for the first time. Norton wrote the unique legislation, launching a new direction in federal land use, to benefit the District, as well as the federal government. Both are receiving new revenue, and the District is also getting a new stable of jobs and economic development.
“Forest City Washington won a nation-wide competition to undertake the unprecedented project of developing The Yards,” Norton said. “Forest City Washington has skillfully shaped this ambitious project into a vibrant new neighborhood on the Anacostia River. Thanks to the first-ever public-private partnership on federal land created by our bill, The Yards, only in its first phase, will continue to grow over the next 15 to 20 years.”
