WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today will attend the investiture ceremony for Amy Berman Jackson for U.S. District Court Judge for the District of Columbia, Norton's fourth judicial recommendation during the Obama administration. Jackson was confirmed by the Senate in March.
"Amy Berman Jackson has had an exemplary career as a criminal and civil trial attorney, including her tenure as the Assistant U.S. Attorney here," Norton said. "Her vast experience will serve her and District residents well on the bench."
Jackson, a D.C. resident, was a partner at the D.C. litigation firm Trout Cacheris PLLC, graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Law School, clerked for Judge Harrison L. Winter of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit, and served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the District of Columbia, where she was one of the first women to try first-degree murder cases. Jackson has had more than 50 jury trials, and has represented clients in complex civil and white-collar criminal cases, which have included securities class action, mass tort, health care fraud, government contracts and antitrust matters.
President Obama, like President Clinton, gave Norton senatorial courtesy to recommend candidates for important federal law enforcement posts in the District. The Congresswoman established a 17-member Federal Law Enforcement Nominating Commission, made up of D.C. residents from every ward and chaired by Pauline Schneider, to vet and recommend candidates to the Congresswoman, who then does her own interviews and submits her final choices to the President.
In March, the Senate confirmed another Norton pick, James E. Boasberg for U.S. District Court Judge for the District of Columbia. During the last Congress, the Senate confirmed Norton's recommendations for the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Ronald Machen, U.S. District Court Judges for the District of Columbia, Beryl A. Howell and Robert L. Wilkins, and the U.S. Marshal for the District of Columbia, Edwin D. Sloane.
