Norton to Attend Multiple Events this Weekend to Honor Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will speak at events across the District throughout the holiday weekend to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. "On the first Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday since the dedication of the MLK Memorial, it is gratifying to see that District residents are commemorating the day in the King tradition of service and attention to the poor," said Norton, who was a civil rights activist with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in the movement led by Dr. King.

  • Saturday, January 14 (7:45 a.m.): Norton will speak at the 28th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Breakfast hosted by United Planning Organization at the JW Marriott (1331 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW). She will present an award to Harry E. Johnson for his work to erect the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial.
  • Monday, January 16 (9 a.m.): Norton will speak at City Year's Day of Service at Dunbar Senior High School (1301 New Jersey Avenue, NW). Norton, a third-generation Washingtonian, is a graduate of Dunbar. D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray, D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown and U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan are also expected to be on hand for the event, which kicks off a day of service. More than 700 volunteers are expected to assist City Year with the revitalization of Dunbar, the Boys & Girls Club, and Community Academic Public Charter School.
  • Monday, January 16 (1 p.m.): Norton will speak at the 25th Annual "We Feed Our People" National Day of Service at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library (301 G Street, NW).
