Norton to Attend Signing of the Ledbetter Bill at the White House Tomorrow

January 28, 2009

Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), the first woman to chair the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and co-sponsor of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, will go to the White House tomorrow morning, Thursday, January 29, at 10 a.m., for the signing of the bill, which will strengthen the 1963 Equal Pay Act, a key civil rights provision, she enforced during the Carter administration.

"I didn't expect to be a member of Congress when I administered the Equal Pay Act, and I certainly didn't expect that I'd have to attend the signing of a bill that simply returned the Act to exactly where it was when I administered it," Norton said. "I am grateful to our new president for making the Ledbetter bill, the overturning of a Supreme Court decision, his first bill, especially today when women need equal pay even more than they did when the Equal Pay Act was first passed."
