Norton to Bring D.C. Resident Who Benefitted from DACA as Guest to Presidential Address to Congress

February 28, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will bring Claudette Monroy, a District of Columbia resident who benefited from Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), as her guest to President Trump's Joint Address to Congress this evening. Claudette is originally from Torreon, Mexico, and came to the United States at the age of 15 with her mother and younger sister. Claudette earned her undergraduate degree studying Economics and Justice, Peace and Conflict Studies, and is working toward earning her Master's in Education. She currently works to support low-income immigrant families. Claudette believes education is the most empowering tool for low-income families.

"Claudette is a young D.C. resident who I am proud to bring as my guest to tonight's presidential address," Norton said. "In the District of Columbia, we cherish our immigrant residents, who strengthen our communities and enrich our city's diversity. By inviting a D.C. DREAMer, the message to President Trump is that we will not stand for our families being torn apart. Thousands of DREAMers are now terrified by this president's rhetoric and extreme immigration actions. I am grateful Claudette is bravely standing strong and showing that DREAMers are here to stay."
