Norton to Celebrate Legacy of Frederick Douglass Ahead of Statue Move
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Frederick Douglass Home as a national historic site and help launch a project called the New Proclamation of Freedom for those caught in human trafficking on Saturday, October 20, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. at the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site (1411 W Street SE). Norton will also discuss the passage into law of her bill to move the District of Columbia's Frederick Douglass Statue into the United States Capitol.
"Frederick Douglass was not only one of the nation's greatest human rights heroes, he was one of the most distinguished District of Columbia residents of his time, serving as the first Recorder of Deeds for D.C. I look forward to celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Douglass home historic site, and to the day when we can officially welcome his statue into its new home in the United States Capitol," Norton said. "I am particularly pleased to join the Frederick Douglass Family Foundation in unveiling the New Proclamation of Freedom Project, in the Douglass abolitionist tradition, to draw attention to the 21st century slavery issue of human trafficking."
