Norton to Celebrate Opening of New Metro Storage and Maintenance Facility

September 26, 2012

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will give remarks at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the first new Metrobus maintenance and storage facility to open in nearly a quarter of a century on Friday, September 28, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at 2 Village Lane SW. Norton is a senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and ranking Democrat on one of its subcommittees. The new Shepherd Parkway Bus Maintenance and Storage Facility replaces the Southeastern Bus Garage, which was torn down to make way for Nationals Park. Construction costs were partially covered by $30 million in federal stimulus funds, which came from the $1 billion Norton fought to obtain for the District.

"Evidence persists that stimulus funding produces jobs, adding or saving 3.5 million jobs, as reported by the Congressional Budget Office. The vast majority of the $1 billion in stimulus money I was able to get for the District of Columbia went to build roads, bridges, and federal construction projects that our residents see under construction daily," Norton said. "But, stimulus funds also were an important source for projects that were vital but less visible. A new, state-of-the-art storage and maintenance facility for buses is essential for safe, on-time buses." This project in Southwest Washington offers another opportunity for jobs for D.C. residents.
