Norton to Celebrate Re-Launch of Black LGBT Group, Address Challenges Facing LGBT Community

October 10, 2012

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will address challenges facing the African American LGBT community during a celebration for the re-naming of the International Federation of Black Prides, now known as the Center for Black Equity, on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at The National Council of Negro Women, 633 Pennsylvania Avenue NW.

"The Black LGBT community suffers a special dual brand of discrimination from within their own black community every day, and again in the larger society. With our Black LGBT community in the forefront, today's political climate offers unique opportunities to reinforce the truism that human rights are indivisible and draw no artificial lines," Norton said. "I welcome the opportunity to celebrate the Center for Black Equity, and to assist with their mission of ‘Improving the lives of Black LGBT People Globally.'"
