Norton to Chair Subcommittee on Highways and Transit Hearing, Discuss Safety of America’s Roads, Tomorrow

April 8, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will chair the House Subcommittee on Highways and Transit hearing tomorrow titled "Every Life Counts: Improving the Safety of Our Nation's Roadways." The hearing will explore the safety of our nation's roads and what can be done to lower the number of traffic-related fatalities and injuries. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recorded a six percent increase in traffic fatalities from 2015 to 2016 nationwide.

"Traffic safety has become a critical national issue facing commuters and pedestrians today," Norton said. "As our subcommittee looks to modernize traffic flows and infrastructure, we must confront the chronic federal underinvestment that has left our roads more dangerous to pedestrians and drivers alike. I welcome tomorrow's expert testimony to drive home this serious problem. We can and should rethink and redesign our infrastructure to keep all who share our roads safe."
