Norton to Cut Ribbon on Final Construction Phase of Mixed-Income Housing Development
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will help cut the ribbon on the final phase of construction at Capitol Quarter, a mixed-income community in Ward 7, on Wednesday, October 24, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at 341 L Street SE. Capitol Quarter is the largest redevelopment in the city funded in part by a HOPE VI grant, which Norton helped the city obtain. When completed, the development will contain more than 1,600 new units for rent and for sale, including a one-to-one replacement of the public housing units demolished to make way for this project.
"Capitol Quarter is a shining example of what can be done with HOPE VI grant funds," Norton said. "The District's success with HOPE VI grants has helped the city receive new ones. Considering the city's shortage of affordable housing, the Capitol Quarter development is particularly welcome because it replaces each and every public housing unit demolished to clear the way for new construction and offers homes for sale in the $700,000 range that are designed to be environmentally friendly. I am particularly pleased that Capitol Quarter will open near the ongoing redevelopment of the District's Southeast Waterfront community that my Southeast Waterfront public-private partnership law set in motion several years ago."
