Norton to Cut Ribbon on New Justice Department Building This Morning

WASHINGTON, DC -- Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will give opening remarks today at 11:00 a.m. at the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the new home of a section of the Department of Justice at Two Constitution Square. Norton, chair of the Subcommittee on Economic Development, has had a strong voice in encouraging federal agencies to occupy office space in the NoMa community, benefitting federal taxpayers and providing job opportunities for residents.

"NoMa is the new, vibrant mixed-use community that boasts convenient access to the Capitol, downtown, Union Station, and Capitol Hill," said Norton. "Brand name private sector headquarters, such as CNN and CareFirst, long ago discovered NoMa, which is a stone's throw from the Capitol, with the Justice Department as its centerpiece. NoMa has now come of age."

The federal agencies that will have a presence in NoMa include the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Federal Maritime Commission, Federal Protective Services, General Services Administration, Internal Revenue Service, Department of Education, Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.

NoMa is a growing neighborhood north of Union Station and the U.S. Capitol. In the last five years, private developers have invested more than $3 billion in the 35-block area, and have plans to develop more than 20 million square feet of office, residential, hotel, and retail space. In 2010, more than 5,000 people moved into NoMa to live or work, and eight new retailers opened for business. NoMa has 15 modes of transportation, including two Red Line Metro stops, and biking facilities, with the only East Coast Bikestation, the 8-mile Met Branch Trail, and six Capital Bikeshare stations.
