Norton to Feature on D.C. Emancipation Day Panel, Tomorrow

April 15, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will celebrate D.C. Emancipation Day tomorrow and speak on a panel at the African American Civil War Museum. D.C. Emancipation Day celebrates when slaves in the nation's capital were freed nine months before the Emancipation Proclamation. Despite this celebration, nearly 157 years later, D.C. residents are not fully free and equal to other American citizens. Congress can overturn local D.C. laws and collects federal taxes without representation, despite D.C. residents serving and sacrificing their lives in every U.S. war.

Media interested in attending can RSVP to jack.miller@mail.house.gov.
